The Trouble With Building

Mount Mania

Bitty and frustrating as far as my writing is concerned. I’m working on a Science Fiction story set in NZ four hundred years in the future. I love the story, and have written 60,000 words so far. The problem is that we’re in the middle of a building project that’s proving very distracting.

Dusk at Ocean Beach
Our piece of land is at Whangarei Heads, on beautiful Ocean Beach. I wake up to the sound of the waves every morning and look out at the sea. It’s the most enchanting place I’ve ever lived.

Dig and Delve
So writing should be easy peasy here - there’s bags of inspiration for a story about a world with violent weather. My computer stands ready. I sit at my desk, gazing out at the wild Pacific waves - and then the building work starts and it’s so fascinating, I’m lost. The digger scoops up sand, post holes are drilled, retaining walls built and I have to go outside and watch.
Perhaps the answer is to write a novel about diggers - except Terry Pratchett has already been there and done that far better than I ever could, damn it!
